Porto-Novo (230,000 inhabitants in 2002) is the official capital of Benin. The Republic of Benin, a West African country, has 7,513,946 inhabitants in 2006, covering an area of 112,622 km2 spreading 670 km from the Niger River (on the north) to the Atlantic coast (on the south).
The country has neighbor, Togo to the west, Nigeria to the east and Niger and Burkina Faso to the north.
